Got the same errors Dave did. "Missing atom:link" (redundant), and "Use of unknown namespace" (defeats the entire point of using XML). Bit silly.

Another day, another site hiding RSS in their site headers. In this case, this particle physics site: https://www.symmetrymagazine.org/feed/

As much as I dislike WordPress, it's neat that I can still add "/feed/" to a URL, and it almost always still works.

I also realised in my earlier Hosted FeedLand post I typo'd "I can give my 100%"... I meant "I can't". I think people figured out haha.

But hopefully I will be soon. Unrelated to FeedLand, but I just stood up a Node stack on FreeBSD again last week, and have been looking at using NetBSD in more places too.

The social aspect has started! I got an email from someone chuffed that I added them to my FeedLand blogroll, which means he appears on my public river that I link to from my blog.

It reminded me of that experience in the early 2000s when everyone had that list of people in their blog sidebars. I... miss sidebars. But there was always that butterflies-in-stomach moment when someone you respected and admired put your name there. It meant WAY more than a social media follow.

I've been happily watching the threads about self-hosted FeedLand over on GitHub. I'd love to pitch in, but I hate committing to something I can give my 100%. When my circumstances change, I'll throw my towel into the ring :).

I'm a FreeBSD person, and have run Node stacks on it. Would love to contribute testing and docs for it.

As I've said, FeedLand (and rediscovering OPML) have been bright sparks in an otherwise dark couple of months. Thanks to Dave and the contributes who make it possible. ♡

Decided to consolidate a bunch of my FeedLand categories. "Local" now has all the regional stuff I care about, for example. Pretty easy just to retag the affected feeds.

I think I've got most of my subscriptions checked and imported. I'm wary of overloading Dave's servers with too much stuff. This is most of what I care about, as disparate and random as it all is!

I remember Doc Searls talking about this at his BloggerCon III talk. Incidently, it was one of the first podcasts I listened to in high school. Was the first inkling I had that there was something much, much bigger here.

Hack of the day: if a blog is hosted with Wix, add "/blog-feed.xml" to get its RSS feed.

They're otherwise not surfaced anywhere. No RSS link, not even an alternative meta tag.

My consolidation into FeedLand continues! :)

I was tempted to import my various blogrolls, but this time I'm subbing to feeds manually so I can categorise them and make decisions. A few I've decided not to import, because I'm a different person to who I was as a kid in 2004. More signal, less noise.

I've also unsubbed to a bunch of news feeds on Twitter, Mastodon, etc. I read stuff I care about here first, so they were redundant.

Here's a thought experiment: what feeds wouldn't you include in your FeedLand?

Thus far I've subscribed to feeds like advisories, security bulletins, and open source software errata under my Tech category, but I don't add them to All. I think that's a good balance.

(It also just started BUCKETING down with rain... and there's still direct sunlight coming in through this cafe window. Looks like I'm stuck working here for a bit longer!)

I can tell if a site has staying power if I type its URL subconsciously.

Today during a boring meeting I found myself typing FeedL... and Firefox autocompleted to my public FeedLand page.

I have a review pending on my blog, but I think that's probably the most honest words of praise one could give. 👍

There are podcasts here! I saw Dave replied to my news item about no podcasts. I just didn't see the small headphone icon.

With hindsight, it's right there, and really obvious. I clicked the thumbs-up like button on Dave's reply :).

(This is also why I love using software by indie developers and small teams).

Why no podcasts here? I'm using a service developed by the inventor of podcasting, so it might be a surprise.

I have a simple reason: I listen to podcasts from my phone, because I tend to pause, replay sections, and take notes. For me, this is easier when done on a separate device.

That said, YouTube subscriptions are a perfect fit for a river format. I can have a tab dedicated to them, and choose something to watch by scrolling down. No need to be logged into a Google account, and I can see everything I'm interested in sorted by date, not channel.

Couple of new things today:

• I updated the CSS to match my own blog, and so I can fit a couple more tags without it word-wrapping. I think it looks half-decent :).

• I decided to include my YouTube subscriptions after all!
