It’s June 18. Happy Pride! “The Sun and the Star” by Mark Oshiro and Rick Riordan is in the Percy Jackson and it’s gaaaaaay. It’s about boyfriends and demigods Nico di Angelo and Will Solace, the sons of Hades and Apollo, on their quest into Tartarus to rescue their old friend Bob. There are adventures and battles and mythic creatures come to life. There are personal demons and personal growth realized, healing from trauma and learning to support each other. It’s a rollicking middle grade tale.

Mark Oshiro (to LGBTQ+ readers): “You belong here. You belong in adventures, in fantasies, in middle grade books, in the world around us. You are every bit as important and as brilliant as the sun and the stars. We both hope that this #book makes your heart sing!”

Rick Riordan: “Writing about two young queer demigods, I felt very strongly that this wasn’t a story I should be telling by myself as an older straight guy. I needed to work with a great LGBTQ+ author who could bring perspective and thoughtfulness to these characters in ways that I might not be able to.”

If you are looking for a post-apocalyptic teenage sapphic shoot-em-up Korean inspired mecha revolution, "Gearbreakers" by Zoe Hana Mikuta may be up your alley. Cybernetically enhanced Sona Steelcrest escapes her mecha training and falls in with outlaws in the desert, and especially with Eris Shindanai, the fierce leader of a scrappy band of teenage rabble rousers. It’s full of bad attitudes, questionable technology, teenage drama, and traumatized youth fighting the man. Good wholesome YA fun.

Halfway through Pride, my bright and shiny things. I hope you have a lovely weekend and can chill out and read a #book.

“So This is Ever After” by FT Lukens is totally delightful. It was written as a “romcom in a castle” about what happens *after* the wicked overlord is slain. The story follows a band of teenage heroes as they become a reluctant king and his council after whacking off the evil wizard’s head. They need to re-establish relations with other countries, get the kingdom finances in order, and find the king’s fated soulmate, who is definitely NOT his best friend and wizard. It’s a very fun, queer, and quirky DnD themed romp and romance. A delightful quick read. Z gobbled it up, too.

FT Lukens: “While I’m certain there were books being written with queer characters, I didn’t have access to them. I didn’t know where to look for them. And even in spec media, where boundaries could be pushed, a lot of times it was always the alien, or they were only in the background, or they died, and that didn’t feel great at all. So it’s important to me that I write stories where queer young adults can see themselves as heroes and can have a happy ending and can be their authentic selves.”
