I was going to apply for a job I'm a fit for—a good fit. But as I looked at the site and read what employees said, I decided against it. No one looks over 40, no one looks like me. I've found it almost impossible to get more than an "After careful review, we have decided not to move forward with next steps" email—if that. Age discrimination? The market? I don't know. I know this is the roughest market I've seen since the 1980s. But one friend said I had to, given my qualifications and experience with docs-as-code, SOC 2, developer docs, etc. A doc engineer there asked me to reconsider and apply, as he thought I'd be a great addition. So I did this morning. Resume rewritten, cover letter, and went through the online app. And I won't be surprised if I get a rejection in a few days.

I have no concerns, no qualms about supporting KamalaHarris for the next President of the US. Do I agree with her 100%? Not always. She may move slower than I like. She may move faster than I like. But she always moves in the direction I like. You don't pick a candidate who matches you 100%. You pick a candidate you know and believe has the best interests of this country at the forefront of her thoughts. I only know her from her work in California and the US Senate. She has my support and my vote. Anyone on the fence about VP Harris needs to get off it now! As President, I am confident she will do what is best for all Americans. I trust Kamala Harris. Ask yourself -- is there any other Democrat who you would trust more with your future? #Harris2024

I really do get it. He had a bad debate. Part of that is he was tired from a long trip, the preparation, and a cold, and yes, his age to an extent. The other part wasn't his fault. It wasn't a debate. They really didn't engage each other. Trump lied and lied and lied, and neither moderator called him on that. Biden answered the questions. He was honest and at least followed the debate rules.

And I get that you are angry at the genocides in the Middle East and want someone in power to do something, anything, to stop it and hold someone accountable and make it stop. I do get it. But Biden doesn't have unfettered power. By that logic, FDR should have been voted out for not being more proactive about letting European Jews and others into this country and taking more action to stop the Holocaust. Presidents often must make decisions that are unpopular but are likely the best available to both move the issue forward and retain enough votes in Congress to get shit done. It isn't often nice, but that's our system. And you won't change the system through fascism. It's been tried before in Europe.

But at the same time, you think you are powerless, and the only logical vote is a protest vote or a third-party vote because "that will show them!" It won't work. It won't change the Constitution, it won't make things better, and really, it will worsen if Project 2025 gets implemented. To quote Angela Lansbury's character in The Manchurian Candidate, such a protest vote will "sweep [them] into the White House with powers that will make martial law seem like anarchy."

But here's the thing. Third-party or sitting it out won't work because Republicans and MAGA (one and the same?) vote like they breathe. They vote on the party line every time. There is no timeline for when Trump's return to office will improve our future. None.

I’m sorry that this is the truth and that the truth sucks. Don’t listen to the “useful idiots” like celebrities, the media, and the pundits. They really won’t be hurt by a Trump presidency. They can leave the US. Biden hasn’t done that badly with the policies he’s pushed for and implemented. If the Dump Biden movement succeeds, many legal issues will take time and air from the job of campaigning. One is that the new candidate will need to be certified on state ballots. And I don’t need to tell you some states will keep Biden on the ballot just to fuck this up and assure a Trump presidency. God forbid something happens to Biden during his second term, but Kamala Harris is well-qualified to be President.

So, this is our reality. I’m voting Biden-Harris, and I don’t have any qualms. I’m voting for the least shitty future I can get.

Due to the layoff, I had a session with a recruiter/specialist (company-supplied). We reviewed my resume, work history, experience and talents, what I've done, and more. Then, he told me frankly that at my age (67), it would be extremely difficult for me to find another full-time position. He gave me some things to read and think about and 'exercises' to complete for the next session. I'm gobsmacked. I intended to work until 70, then take Social Security and access my 401(k). Too old to work (that's the message) is disheartening. And it makes me angry. The specialist suggested doing the reading and thinking and completing the exercises to get an idea of what I'd like to do. One of the things he threw out for me to think about is working freelance. I could do that... He also suggested getting out of technical writing and using those skills elsewhere (part of the reading and exercises). But it is all I've known for almost 40 years. Sigh...
