Finished reading The Stand-In so I'm crossposting the AU hc here cuz I'm still thinking about it. 🐧🐧SFW kacchako. Also trying out a thread poster until bsky gets the inbuilt function so 👀

Uravity (not Ochako) gets injured in a failed mission, and to not tip off the villains about her injury, Dynamight (yes Katsuki), her hero partner, needs a stand-in: a fake Uravity.

He sees /her/ at the convenience store near Uravity’s hospital. She’s behind the counter, counting cash at the till, and from certain angles, she’s a spitting image for the current hero.

Ochako, her nametag reads, is just /rounder/ than Uravity.

He asks about her quirk and she answers that she’s quirkless—a little too quickly for Katsuki’s liking. It doesn’t matter. Desperation is desperation—for both of them.

He says he has a job for her that’ll pay at least quadruple what the convenience store does. All she has to do is look exactly how she does. She doesn’t accept it right away, but he goes back there three more times that week when rumours about Uravity’s absence grow.

Finally, she agrees. Katsuki gets her all set up and enrolled with the Hero Association for the remainder of his mission. Again, she says she’s quirkless. Again, Katsuki is a little suspicious.

She does the photo-ops and the rumours stop. She’s able to answer all the hard-ball questions at interviews, and Uravity’s rating shoots up. He finds out that she didn’t have all the opportunities that he or Uravity did, but she’s happy to save up to eventually go to school.

He finds out that her favourite food is the terrible convenience store mochi (not the good stuff at festivals because mochi is best enjoyed in your pajamas in front of the dim light of a TV as you fall asleep surrounded by friends and family).

He finds out that the resemblances between her and Uravity end at their looks, and the closer he looks, even those aren’t the same. Ochako’s cheeks are fluffier, her grin tilts to the other side, and her hips are… fuller.

Katsuki absolutely doesn’t mind these differences. He and Uravity were friends at most, but he and Ochako are something else entirely. Uravity is recovering well and everything goes great—until it doesn’t.

The villains from the failed mission ambush the agency. In trying to save the civilians, Katsuki forgets to save himself. Ochako, however, doesn’t forget. And, it turns out, she’s not quirkless. Where Uravity /only/ makes things float, Ochako has full control over gravity.

When she’s holding up the building of their agency an carrying him out—heaved over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes—she apologies for not telling him about her unregistered quirk.

Only heroes and people who pay for special licenses can use their quirks in public. Ochako used to use hers to help her family’s construction business, and they couldn’t afford these licenses or the prying eyes of the registry.

Katsuki couldn’t give two shits about the minor bureaucratic infraction when she’s saving his life. Working together, they catch the villains off guard with Ochako’s new quirk.

When the Hero Association comes for Ochako, Katsuki is more than willing to pay all her fines and clear her name. Ochako is a hero, damnit. License or not.

When the real Uravity returns, she decides that hero life might not be for her after all. The injury strained her personal life and gave her time for reflection. She leaves the spotlight, and under the guise of a seeming quirk-awakening, the public is none the wiser.

Katsuki tells Ochako that there’s an education program for heroes who want to upskill. He tells her he’ll train with her and get her up to speed on regulations. And, he says she looks damn good in the suit.

There’s a new Uravity in town. And Katsuki couldn’t be happier.
