One of the biggest mistakes I made while working at Quilt was assuming people wouldn't change. While I could never judge a victim for prioritising their own safety, I've seen a many people turn themselves around, and I think we should leave room for that.

Many people I care about fall into this boat. They've done bad (sometimes horrible) things and hurt people in the past, but they took responsibility, worked to solve their issues, and tried to mend fences where possible and realistic.

I, too, have been in this position. I was once a gamergator, complaining about "fake gamer girls", "SJWs", and generally being transphobic - doing bad and hurting people. Today, I advocate for social justice, equality, and especially the LGBT and neurodiverse communities.

I didn't really deserve to be forgiven, but once I started working on myself and correcting my mistakes, I was given the space and support I needed to truly understand why I was wrong, and learn how to support those that need it.

At the end of the day, imho, nobody should be judged if they decide not to forgive those who hurt them, even if they decide to broadcast their hurt into the future - but if that's you, and you feel safe and confident enough to give someone a chance to fix things - why not?
