I had this idea for a non-traditional a/b/o where betas are the ones oppressed by their society, seen as basically a temporary 3rd to alpha/beta relationships (alpha!bakugou, omega!deku, beta!kirishima, kiribakudeku, no quirk AU, UA is a college)

betas are mediators. they help omegas with their stress, and they help alphas with their aggression. but once a couple sorts through their issues? there's no need for a beta anymore

they don't have a lot of rights, can't marry or adopt, its very hard for them to find a job (and no laws against discrimination or exploitation), beta abuse is common in relationships, etc

having a child present as a beta (at 16) can sometimes be seen as shameful, so disowning rates are higher among betas. and if a beta is caught pretending to be a different subgender, the law punishes them harshly. and they don't usually get to choose what a/o pair they join

being a beta is just bad in p much every way. the only thing they have going for them is that they can control their scent, so no accidentally giving away how they feel (distressed, most often) but this means that scenting w/o consent is also against the law.

kirishima is one of the uncommon betas to actually pursue college, since acceptance rates are low. but UA is (slightly) better than others. they even have a ~~beta teacher~~ working there. so he manages to get in.

ofc kiri is confused, but bkdk fell in love with kiri and they want him not as a beta, but as a partner. which is not technically illegal but def not advertised as "what betas are for" so they face a lot of issues. but bkdk ain't giving up on their beta mate without a FIGHT

it would be fun to write a full fic for this, maybe even including advocating for and winning beta rights? but i've never had the energy or spoons for it so it never went anywhere lol
