We took our severely disabled son to MSD yesterday to prove he was our severely disabled-will-never-work-nor-live-independently son in person so that he could receive a benefit. We are in the process of transitioning him from his high school where he has been loved and cherished. He is 21. We found out he should have been receiving a benefit for three years after coming off the child disability payment three years ago. No one informed us. It has taken me weeks to get all the paperwork sorted online to transition him from school. When I got to the MSD, the staff were helpful and respectful of our son but in two weeks since I'd uploaded all the docs, the system has changed and they were requiring more evidence of his lifelong chromosomal deletion from our GP. While I was tearful and exhausted, it wasn't me I was feeling defeated for, but the thousands of people across our country who don't have the resources I do. No wonder we see people begging on our streets. It is no wonder we have the gaps in education. It is no wonder we have social and spiritual deprivation if even making an online application is an exercise in futility. I want #louiseupston and the #nationalparty to understand that their policies will only drive our society and those most vulnerable into the ground. The MSD looked understaffed and undervalued and it was no surprise to me that there were more than three security staff watching us throughout the process at different times in our journey through what should have been a simple process. What have we come to, New Zealand?
