A Message from your Canadian Neighbours

Good morning from New Brunswick.

Last night was a tough night for us. The country we thought was our best friend in the world completely turned its back on us. Our neighbours, family, and friends in the USA chose to attempt to cripple our economy. To paraphrase the the great American wordsmith Paulie Walnuts: "We feel like we've been stabbed in the heart."

We thought we were on the same side. We fought with you in Normandy. We fought with you in Korea. We fought with you in Afghanistan. We built an incredible continental economy together that is the largest and most successful business partnership in the world. All of that was all for nothing.

The mood is pretty bleak in Canada. We saw this coming but thought your President would listen to reason. We created a new border program and we're going to invest over a billion dollars to strengthen border security after your President demanded it. We took him seriously that this was all because of 40 lbs of fentanyl that was seized at the Canada-USA border. We found out last night that he hasn't taken the Prime Minister's calls since the Inauguration and that the tariffs were his plan regardless what we did.

This is especially tough in New Brunswick. Maine is our neighbour. We love to visit and vacation in your state. We do business together. We sell you electricity and heating oil and gasoline. We have a shared history and in many cases we share family. Despite this, the parts of Maine that support the President most strongly are the border towns. Are Presque Isle and Calais really that angry at Perth-Andover and St Stephen?

We really hope this doesn't get worse, but all signs are that your President is going to dig his heels in on this. He said he wants to use economic force to coerce Canada to become the 51st state. He doesn't seem listen when people say no.

That said, all the best in your future endeavours, Maine. We had a good thing going. We didn't pick this fight, but we're already pulling American liquor off our shelves and cutting American suppliers out of government contracts. The mood up here is very anti-American right now. Hopefully shredding all your cross border goodwill was worth making Donald Trump feel better.
