It's time for Mystery Beer! A month ago, my local homebrew shop decided that they weren't making their margins and rather than sign a lease for another year (speculation), they needed to close.

They cut prices on everything, including ingredients by 20%, so in addition to picking up a few more kegs, I planned out three recipes: a porter (#1), an altbier (#2) and a cream ale (#3).

Unfortunately, they were out of flaked maize, so the mashbill wound up as 11# of Weyermann Isaria 1924, so I figured it would be a single malt, single hop (SMaSH) beer instead.

I picked up the grains which were each packaged in 2 plastic bags (6 bags total, each labeled with the recipe number.

Since recipe #3 is the most summer-like, I started brewing it today. Unfortunately, it's very much not Isaria. The color is much darker. If I'm lucky(ish), there was just a confusion between recipes #2 and #3, and this is the altbier.

That wouldn't be great, because the water profile was set up for the Isaria and I don't have an altbier yeast starter going - for the SMaSH, I planned to use Kveik Lutra. So, I swapped hops in go the Hallertau, leave the Mount Hood in the freezer, and plan for the Lutra

And away we go! The brew day wrapped up a couple of hours ago and the Lutra is already starting to ferment!

But, looking at the remaining bags of grain, I think that only two of the bags may have been mislabeled! In that case, I have a (roughly) 50/50 split between Isaria and Altbier. Unless of course, *all* of the bags are mislabeled, in which case, who can say?

Right now, I'm going to assume I've got 2 half and halves and will try the next batch using maybe the same Hallertau hops, but make up a starter from my Düsseldorf alt slant. At the very least, that should give a sense of the yeast profiles. Then hopefully, there will be a porter later, when it's cooler.

If all 6 bags were randomly labeled then we'll have 15 gallons of quasi mystery beer and if one of them turns out really well, I'll never be able to reproduce it :-D
