I volunteer with the Tulsa County Democrat (TCDP) and get many phone calls from folks asking “what can I do”? These calls come mixed with anxiety, angst, frustration, anger, and sometimes bewilderment and out right disbelief about what is happening to our country.

Here are some of the things I tell them.

Be informed: Stay connected to friends, family, and community groups that fit your lifestyle and choices. Stay informed but limit the doom scrolling. Talk things out, do not hold in your fears and frustrations

Be Involved: Find local groups like your local Democratic party or social justice group. Signup on social media, Blue Sky is great and FB (I know, I know) has the ability to connect people to events in their communities .

Be Invested: Help support the legal challenges by donating to the legal teams defending America. Call, Email, Text, write letters to your federal and state representatives and to congressional committee chairs and ranking members.

Lastly, but may be the most important and hardest, do not gloat or tell the Trump voters who are showing remorse, “we tried to tell you” or “you deserve this”. Encourage a conversation and welcome their awakening to truth and justice for all.

Et Tu NPR

I get it that NPR is scared of losing federal funding, but if they are not going to challenge misleading statements or allow omissions of facts, what good are they? Don’t get me wrong I support #NPR and just want them in the fight for Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

This morning, while listening to NPR reporting on the Trump Administration’s gag rule on #DHS sharing of information to the media, the Spokesperson for Trump, stated that the #transition could have gone smoother.

The challenge to this is the statement by Susie Wiles, Trump's Chief of Staff, that the Biden administration has been helpful In making a smooth transition. Need to tell the whole story and not leaving the public hanging with false impressions.

How do you respond to someone who says their vote does not matter? There are millions of people who could vote, but they do not. Their excuses are just that, an excuse for not doing what they know they should. Let me share something about voting.

Question: Ask the non-voting person if they attend concerts, sporting events, school plays… When they say they do (because all of us do at one time or another) ask them how they show the athlete or performer their appreciation. The answer is they clap and cheer.

Now, ask them if the performer or athlete can recognize their individual clapping and cheering. Probably not. They are one of many and the individual’s appreciation is added to the others in the audience and helps make a louder appreciation than one person can make.

This is how a single vote works. When everyone votes, all the votes are added together to show approval for the candidate, or bond issue, or proposal or … One vote by itself may not change he outcome of the election, but many voting together will!

And while on the topic of voting, when the non-voter says the candidates do not support their issues, ask them which candidate comes closest. In a binary election system one candidate’s policies will always be better than the other. Pick the better of the two choices

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner” Patrick Swayze’s character in the movie Dirty Dancing is pretty adamant about this. Well, that is exactly what the GOP is committed to doing to all of the “Baby’s” in America. Whether “Baby” is your Daughter, Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Sister, Cousin, Wife, or just a girl or woman you may or may not know, the Republican Party has decided that these “Baby’s” do not have a right to be equal and are working at taking away bodily autonomy, or even to travel between states.

I remember when girls were “allowed” to wear slacks (jeans came later) to school. The freedoms that the Grandmother’s and Mom’s in America grew up with are disappearing. Think of this when you enter the voting booth this year.

If you do not want your “Baby” to be put in a corner, think of how you can vote to put people into government who will protect your daughter’s rights and freedoms. If you are a woman registered as (or registered adjacent to) a Republican voter, take a moment, and ask yourself if you want your daughters to have less freedoms that you have had in your life.

Do not vote to send your daughters back to being a second-class member of our society. Do not let someone in government treat your daughters as chattel.

If you want a bright future for your daughter and keep her out of a corner, vote for her future. Vote Blue, no one will know you did, and you will feel great.

<source:markdown>“Nobody puts Baby in a corner” Patrick Swayze’s character in the movie Dirty Dancing is pretty adamant about this.
