Sunday Storytime: I completed my BS in Enviromental Science in 2016, after I had failed out my freshman year (99-00), and started a career as a Govt contractor. In 2010, when I went to leave my company, I was offered a generous position at DOD.

Unfortunately as we moved towards preparing onboarding paperwork, I was told that the offer was being reconsidered because, despite my 10 years of experience at managing multimillion dollar statewide geospatial projects…not having an undergrad degree was a DQ.

Disappointed, but motivated, I signed up for classes at the local community college, left my company, started my own small business contracting firm, and worked a side job fixing computers in Retail.

Within a year, I was an assistant manager, in no small part because of my experience. I continued working two jobs, raised a family (8 kids!), and got my BS after 6 years.

With paper in hand, I went looking for a job! You’d be surprised that, despite my experience and a BS, it was so competitive in 2016, I almost accepted a position with Census that would have been a 2 hour commute, and turned down a position, because it paid less than retail.

Undeterred, I stuck out retail for another 7 years, earning my MBA while working 60+ hrs a week through the pandemic. Finally, through a friend, I was able to squeeze my way into the Federal Government, as a staffing assistant one year ago.

Now, I am blessed to be able to be a part of staffing our great cadre of civil servants…people who wholeheartedly care out serving their communities and Country, and protecting the Constitution.

I am concerned for no reason other than “I voted for the other guy”. Maybe I shouldn’t be? But…I started polishing my resume again. I also started looking into going back to school, because I feel a need to grow. I guess that makes me an elitist. I think it makes me prepared.

I also think that if education and training were more affordable, we wouldn’t demonize education in the way we have. But what do I know…
