The EU is effectively admiting that it knows that its anti-migration policies can only work by enabling authoritarian governments to become fully-fledged dictatorships. There is no other way. How do you get an entire state to agree on doing your dirty work if that government is remotely accountable to its people? Dictatorships are better at doing this

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/13/eu-fears-for-its-human-rights-credibility-as-tunisia-crushes-dissent-leak-shows

The EU has been actively bankrolling authoritarian governments in exchange for policing, controlling, torturing and even killing black and brown people who dare want to come to Fortress Europe. A few months ago I wrote about how the EU has been trying to bail out the Lebanese sectarian elites that have destroyed my country.

https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/6/11/the-eus-1-billion-euro-gift-will-hurt-lebanon-and-its-people

It is very clear that they know what they’re doing. I just think they aren’t entirely comfortable with the consequences of their own actions because they still care (for now) about how this looks, at least to a certain extent. Tbh I don’t think, at least from what I’ve seen, they’re willing to do much about it beyond expressing ‘concerns’. They don’t actually seem to know what to do with this monster that they’ve helped create.
