Falling in love with Miyano Yoshikazu was as easy as breathing itself. One day, it just felt as if all the air in Sasaki Shuumei's lungs was made up of him. He couldn't let go of it if he wanted to keep on living.

Living like this came with its own difficulties, though. Like pretending that brushing against Miyano's arm was an accident rather than a deliberate move. Like seeing him smile and resist the urge to pull his friend against his chest and never let go.

"Are you alright, Shuu-kun?" Miyano's voice tickles in Sasaki's ear, flooding his mind with impossible possibilities and the urge to offer his heart to the guy that is just talking way too close to his ear right now.

Just what is he supposed to do about these bubbling feelings when he knows Miyano is a thick as a rock and doesn't notice anything? Why else would he be resting his head on Sasaki's shoulder without a care in the world while skimming his newest BL manga?

What other explanation is there for him not noticing the clear arrhythmia in Sasaki's chest? Or the lack of breathing? Because Miyano is, after all, the lung in his air and he really, really doesn't want to let him go?

"Yeah, all good." It isn't a lie. Not exactly anyway. Sasaki is always alright when he can be with his childhood friend; all cuddled up while reading. He is alright with Miyano's warmth burning itself into his body until it is hard to tell where Sasaki begins and Miyano ends. He is decidedly alright with spending his day with this bittersweet pain of being so close while wanting even more.

Sasaki isn't sure when exactly he noticed these feelings to be quite honest. They had spent every day together ever since they met on Miyano's first day of kindergarten. When Sasaki just grabbed him and pulled him to the sandbox because that's just what he felt like doing.

But they had been children then. It had been easy to spent their days together even when they weren't at the same school because Miyano was a year behind him in terms of grades and, going by age, almost two years younger.

Their schools always ended up being close, so it wasn't hard to meet up after classes and walk home together. And while Miyano ended up joining the literature club in middle school, Sasaki never really found anything he was more interested in than waiting for him.

//

Small re-post of my childhood friend AU I made on twt in May. Featuring a minor spell check and tense improvements! I'll post part 2 later
Sensei spoke about childhood friends on streams today, so I had to dig it up!
